Limpy

Our dear little Limpy, where to start with his complicated story.
We were contacted by a lady wishing to find a home for a 5 week old, male Rattie that has a birth defect. This lovely person wanted to give him to someone who already had male Rats so that Limpy could have some friends. Perth Rat Rescue & Rehab agreed to take Limpy in and either find him a new home with boys or keep him with the boys we have.
We collected Limpy from his owner on the 23rd of March 2008. Limpy’s story does start off kind of sad, but fate had other plans for him and his siblings.
The lady we collected Limpy off had decided she wanted to have Ratties again as it had been sometime since she had the cute little critters. After contacting someone who had some Rats for offer she went to the agreed place to collect some girl, however things were not that easy. The person that she met told her that the Rats that she did not take, right then, would get killed. So she took all 6 of the babies, they were only around 4 weeks old and should not have even been weaned yet but she had no choice.
This lovely lady found herself at home with 6 beautiful baby Ratties knowing that she would have to give some up if they ended up being Males, of the 6 there were 3 males. 2 of the males she managed to rehome but the people that took 2 of the males were not interested in Limpy because of his obvious deformity of his front right arm. Limpy was taken to the vet to see if anything could be done but unfortunately it is believed to be a birth defect and nothing can give him the use of it.
We bought Limpy home and placed him in a new cage, and gained his trust over a couple of days. He is a very loving, attention seeking, cute, cuddly and special little man with the energy that you expect to see in a 6 and a bit week old Rattie.
We have started introductions with him & Squirt and things are going beautifully. As with all boys, they like to show off and have a rough and tumble. Squirt has never had the company of others, apart from his mum, since he was the one and only pinky of his litter so his manners when it comes to Limpy can be a little “rough” but he has yet to show any aggression. Limpy does very well against any and all of Squirts attacks and seems to be doing all the right things to gain Squirt friendship. We are hoping that within a few week they will be able to live together permanently, however, we will not be rushing this as Limpy is still small and could get hurt quite easily.
As far as we go, Limpy greets us like everyone else in our Ratties family and loves nothing more than a good ol’ treat from mum’s hand. He is very energetic and runs as fast as any Rattie when there is so much to explore.
In the future, Limpy may require surgery to remove the leg that does nothing but dangle, we feel that once he is bigger and stronger we will have a better idea of weather this is an option for a more fulfilling life for him. For now we will continue to spend time with him, leaning about his quirks and him about ours. Limpy is possibly the best thing to ever happen to Squirt. We are positive that in the future they will be inseparable. Squirt also helps Limpy, he cleans that silly leg and foot that does not work because you see, in Squirts own words, “dats no howz itz spoz to beez, meez cleenz it forz youz”, and Limpy is happy for him to do so.
We hope to be able to update this story as things unfold, I am sure Limpy has more than a few surprises and quirks to share.

UPDATED 25/05/08 - Limpy and Squirt are now happily living together and have been for a few months. We intoduced them into a home made cage and apart from having a few "Boy" tussles, to determine the Alpha status, the boys are best of friends. So much so that Squirt will even clean Limpy's deformed leg for him as Limpy is unable to lift it in order to clean it properly.
