Keep your pets warm this winter

The cold snap has brought record lows across the country we've all grabbed an extra blanket and turned the heating up. So all the humans in your house have been look after, but what about the pets?

Veterinarian Dr Katrina Warren joined TODAY to tell you how to keep your pets extra warm this winter.

While we are very good at looking after ourselves during the winter months, we often forget that our pets feel the cold as well. They look so cosy in their warm, furry jackets and cats especially seem to pass their days lazing on window sills in the sun or in the warmest spot on the lounge or bed.

To protect your pets against the onset of the cold winter months, make sure they have a warm, safe place to sleep at night, away from any draughts.

Don't forget to provide fresh water at all times. It can be easy during winter to make the mistake of thinking that pets need less to drink. Clean fresh water should be available at all times.

"We have personally used the SnuggleSafe for elderly, sick and post op rats and have found it to be everything that it claims to be. Simply place it in the microwave for the appropriate time and place it in the rats cage and you have instant heat for your fur babies. We do recommend covering the SnuggleSafe with a thick polar fleece blanket to slow the rats down just incase they decide to try and chew it. We have not had any SnuggleSafe Heat Pads chewed to date and have only good things to report about them. They are also easy to wipe over if they happen to get dirty. The only down side is that replacement covers are not yet available in Australia but i am currently working on a design that will be suitable for additional covers made from polar fleece."
