Dr Adrien Burnstein - Ocean Keys Vet Hospital

Postby Millicent » Tue Feb 10, 2009 7:52 am

He is without a doubt the best vet EVER! He has been treating our animals for 6 months since we got our dog Selby through SAFE (rescue organisation). He did not charge us at all for any of Selby's care. He has a badly undershot jaw. If it wasn't for Adrien donating his time and expertise for Selby's care, SAFE probably would have had to have him PTS. He was from a litter of 8 they got and they couldn't justify thousand's of dollars for the care Selby needed, which I completely understand. Adrien effectively save his life.

He also will rarely charge anything for check ups (ie if you've been in with a sick animal and are coming back a couple of days later for a check up). Best thing is he only asks for a "donation" for small animal care. I tired to give him $20 once, but he wouldn't take more than $10. So for the last 2 visits, I only paid $10. The first visit he checked over Skittle and Hero, gave them an injection and Baytril for each. This last time we went he checked over all 4 and gave me Baytril for Dora. I also enquired about desexing and he will do that for $90, basically to cover anesthesia.

Not long ago our Sheltie (dog) was very unwell. She wouldn't eat, drink or walk. As she is pretty old we thought that it might be time to PTS. Many vets would've just done that. Not Adrien, he said she had plenty of time in her yet. She just had an infection and her arthritis was acting up. He gave her an injection of antibiotics and steriods. And sent her home with pills for both. He also gave us his mobile number and said to call if anything happened. He called personally the next 2 days just to check on her. And said anytime we needed more steriods to come by and just pick them up, not to worry about and appointment. Bonnie is now back to her cheeky old self.

If you are close by, give him try, you won't regret it!

Having now met and use Adrian i can say that i love his bedside manner.

He is super friendly and is definitely willing to learn and do everything possible for the animals to get better.

His charges are very reasonable, and in the end it is alllll about the animals.

I'm not close and I still go to him. I have to drive about 45 mins (would be about the same for you) and it is worth it! :ryes:

He does sound awesome, but 45 mins is too much. I have a couple of good vets a lot closer. I am glad that he is getting the recommendation he deserves. XD

Glad you had a good experience too!! I still see Adrien and don't think I will ever go to another vet. Even though there is one literally around the corner from me. He just is awesome!! Love having a vet that really cares about me and my animals. :ryes:

Adrian saw Sammie twice in his last two days and I have nothing other than praise for him.
The first of the two appointments he told me outright what was wrong and encouraged me to feel it and understand it and when I expressed concern at the cost he told me I would be able to pay the price of the anesthetic only, which was $100.
When Sammie didn't make it, he didn't write up a bill at all, just told me a donation would be nice but that he wouldn't charge me anything.
I gave him what I had anyway.
I feel a lot of compassion for him, he must sacrifice a lot of time and money to help in a job which must include a lot of heartbreak.
Adrian is obviously doing his job for all the right reasons. He is a lovely man.

Bugger, that'll take me an hour and 45 minutes to get to. Rabbit Medicine will take me about an hour. Am I better of travelling further so I know I'm using an experienced vet or will the travel stress them too much? I just really don't think any vets down her are experienced enough with rats.

we only travel about 20 minutes to the vet but our boys are completely unconcerned about the travel. We have a small travel cage and it is either secured between the feet of the passenger or belted into a seat if only one of us is going with the boys. We always make sure we take more than one rat even if only one needs to be seen so the sick rat has someone to cuddle with - preferably someone calm and cuddly :ryes: We also usually put a few snack in the cage - cornflakes or almonds. Usually the boys go to sleep after a while. If you are travelling an hour each way then I would make sure that you take fluids with you - maybe rock or watermelon if you are unable to secure a waterbottle to the travel cage. Even with our relatively short trip our boys always have a long drink after returning from the vet.

i always take a water bottle with me so that they can have water when they get there if they need it, and they always have some food in there, at the very least they have a few lab blocks. the boys easily survive the two hour (up to three hour) trip to visit my parents down south- we either leave a water bottle in or at least once an hour offer them the bottle. the trip to rabbit shop is between 20 and 40 mins depending on traffic.

one time i when i took the boys to the ballajura vet (coz for basic myco issues they are cheaper than rabbit shop and are ok on rat knowledge, have free consults unless meds are prescribed and are a walk in vet unless very busy) which is closer to an hour trip for me, i was involved in a car crash where the other car drove off while i was carefully pulling off the road to let other cars through the busy intercection- please make sure you seatbelt the cage in place or otherwise secure it! the jolt from being hit from behind didnt quite give me whiplash but had the cage not been belted in wouldve knocked it off the seat! by the time i calmed down enough to drive, got to the vets, waited a while, had the appointment, went to the cop station, filled out the accident report, headed to the bfs work to have him check out the car (hes a mechanic) and head home the boys had been (mostly in the car) out for something like 7 hours and they were good with it. and that was while waiting in a fairly warm car while filling out the accident report (i blasted the aircon on soon as i got back and got each of them out for a cuddle and to check they were fine)- their water at that point was warm so i nicked into the local pet store and asked them to fill the bottle with cold water which they drank a lot of poor babies.
but otherwise they were really good if you can get your rats used to drives while young then it doesnt bother them at all- and treats work well to enforce that travel is fun and safe.

as far as taking them to rabbit shop over a local vet- its well worth it. liz is far more experienced and knowledgable, and its well worth the extra cost imo if you can afford it. just beware that for more than one rat its $75 plus gst- so it is pricey.

thanks Aimee
that sounds very reasonable...I had to pay $55 for my last consult, not including meds
Will give him a go I think :)

Adrian is good for basic ailments and his charges are very reasonable. He understands that people don't have a lot of money and doesn't make anything from small animal care but he is caring. Even the meds he offers are supplied for very little, a good vet for those that can't afford Liz (Liz is awesome but we can't all afford the high pricing all the time). It is better to see a less experienced vet then to not see one at all.
