  1. Do you accept Rats of any age?

  2. We can take Rats of all ages provided that they are no younger than 5 weeks old however if you are also bringing mum to the rescue any age is accepted. Young Rats should not be taken away from their mum until they are around 4.5 to 5 weeks old. Although we can take Rats of just about any age we will sometimes reach full capacity at which point we will not be able to take them however if you would like, we will work with you to try and find a suitable new home for your pets.

  3. Will you collect my Rat(s) from me?

  4. Normally we would request that you bring the Rat/s that you would like to surrender directly to us due to the cost of petrol, as I am sure you can appreciate our funds are extremely  limited and the added financial burden of travelling costs means we can not accommodate as many Rats that need new homes. In special cases we will consider collecting the animal/s but the owner may be asked for a donation to help cover some of the additional cost. Please contact us if you need your animal collected.

  5. Do I have to provide a cage?

  6. We encourage people to donate a cage or cages for their surrendered Rats due to a number of reasons including :

      • Reducing stress by allowing the surrendered Rat to stay in a familiar enclosure.

      • Because we do rely on foster volunteers this enables us to supply a cage to the foster carer.

      • Financial burden that is imposed by having to buy multiple quarantine cages for surrendered Rats that need to have vet treatments, medication and time to settle into their new environment before being introduced to other Rats of their gender .

If for some reason you are unable to supply a suitable cage, we may or may not be able to accept your Rat(s). This will depend on if we have cages to be able to monitor and slowly introduce your Rat(s) to the community that are also waiting for new homes.
If you feel that you are desperate to re-home your Rat(s) due to unforseen circumstances and do not have a cage that you can donate please contact us via email at rescue@prrr.org or call 0439 784 326 and we can then advise you of the options available at that time.

  7. Can I surrender my Rat(s) directly to your premises?

  8. The short answer is YES. We will require you to fill out a short form so that we can get as much of the Rat(s) history as possible. This will allow us to pass on this information to the new owner and help us care for the Rat(s) in the meantime. (i.e. Diet, Ailments, History, Temperament, Social Conditioning etc)
